CHAPTER 17

Maytubby stopped at Hannah’s house so she could carry her duty belt inside. On her way into the house, she unsnapped her glove pouch and pocketed the last of her nitrile gloves.

Then they drove to Garn’s garage. “Lemme talk to him first,” Hannah said. Before she reached the open garage door, Garn walked out to greet her. He was wiping his hands on a red shop rag. “Hidey,” he said, and stuck the rag in his back pocket. “Got your window glass delivered from a junkyard in Sulphur. What I was tryin’ to tell you before. Bitch seatin’ it in the regulator, but I got ’er done. Jury-rigged your bumper with zip ties. White ones,” he said, beaming, “so you’ll hardly notice. Found an old tire your size and mounted it for a spare.” He pulled a key from his front pant pocket and handed it to her.

“That was quick. What’s the damage?”

“Oh, forty oughta do it.”

“Thanks, Garn. I’ll bring you a check in about an hour.”

He waved it away.

“Listen, Garn . . .” She nodded toward Maytubby’s pickup. “Sergeant Maytubby and I have to put crime scene tape around that Focus you towed. I’m sorry, but some state investigators are gonna come calling on you.”

Garn frowned, yanked the shop rag out of his back pocket, and began to twist it in his hands.

“Don’t worry, Garn. Nothin’ about you. They’ll just ask about when you towed the Focus. Then they’ll examine the vehicle for evidence.”

Garn didn’t seem reassured. “If you say so, Hannah.” He turned and walked back to the garage, still wringing the shop rag.

As Bond and Maytubby strung the tape, she said, “Garn’s privacy fence around the tow lot should keep out meddlers. I don’t think we need a guard.”

“I don’t think so,” Maytubby said. “Fence has seen better days. But probably not.”

Bond tied off the last bit of tape. “Garn got his back up when the city council made him build that fence.”
